In the fall of 1971, the local Huxley newspaper ran a story. It was titled “Ballard Plaza To Be Ready About November 1st” and featured an architect's sketch. The story highlighted a number of businesses that would call the Ballard Plaza their new home, including Sylvia’s Flowers, Gifts & Imports, Rittger’s Wash & Dry Cleaning, and the Ballard Super Market. This large, brand new shopping center was a big deal for Huxley and the surrounding areas.
Although the Ballard Plaza has seen many businesses come and go over the last five decades, the Plaza itself continues to be a staple along Highway 69 in Huxley, IA. And now in its 50th Anniversary year, the Ballard Plaza will be receiving a “facelift” of its own! The new owner of the Plaza, Chris Gardner, is looking forward to bringing some updates to the area, including new businesses like Scooters Coffee, The Laundry Room, and Compass Nutrition.
Not only are changes coming to the Ballard Plaza, but a secondary shopping center is also currently underway called The Landing, with the foundation going in this week! Located just west of Fareway on the north edge of Huxley, the new space will feature five suites, one of which will be filled by REMAX Concepts.
“We love Huxley and are honored to have these projects coming together. They’re going to be great additions to our community, something we all can be proud of,” said Chris Gardner.
These updated and new shopping areas of Huxley will add to what is already a unique community. The town is made up of great schools and businesses, and community involvement is valued. Friends are just next door. The town combines both small-town Iowa values with growth and economic opportunity. Huxley truly is the Heart of the Prairie.
